The Covered Market

I love Markets. This one in Oxford – is the home of interesting independent shops.

By wandering around the Market I always felt its warm welcome.

Open since 1774, this market offers a very special shopping experience. I love the bright displays of local and exotic fruit and vegetables and the beauty of the florist displays.

Also so interesting to watch skilled confectioners decorate their cake creations.

The range of gifts is extensive, providing many unique items such as toys for children, clothes…..
The Market is also famous for its butchers- but watch out, they are not for the faint-hearted!

There has been a market in Oxford since medieval times. ( Those picture of the Medieval market from the website ‘Daily Medieval’- http://dailymedieval.blogspot.co.uk/2014_03_01_archive.html) But by 18th century the place was untidy, messy….
The Covered Market was built as part of the clean up campaign.

It was design by John Gwynn, the architect responsible for Magdalen bridge, officially opening on November 1st 1774.
